Welcome to Timisoara's Water Museum!

Why would water need a museum? And why does such a museum find its place in Timisoara? During your visit, we will answer these questions and more.

The museum is the result of an investment made by the water and sewerage company Aquatim SA, with the intention of giving the first water treatment plant of the city and its story back to the people. Built between 1910 and 1914, the Water Plant no. 1 Urseni, as it was locally called, was respectfully preserved over time.  Between 2020 and 2023, it went through a complex restoration and rehabilitation process in order to accommodate this museum. Today, three of the buildings that were part of the plant are open to visitors. You are now is a newly built facility acting as a reception area and for hosting cultural events.

And while the plant was commissioned on June 1st 1914, the museum was inaugurated also in June, more precisely on June 9th 2023, the year when the city on the banks of Bega was the European Capital of Culture.  With the project “Water Museum – connection to Timisoara’s cultural network”, implemented by Aquatim Foundation and financed by the Center for Projects for Timisoara Municipality, the museum entered the cultural life of the city. Here, technology, science and art meet water – essential resource for life, but endangered by human activity. The Water Museum takes you on a valuable journey: it unveils the heritage of the past in order to show you the present and the future with new eyes.  It is the journey of water on Earth, a journey that starts now!
